College news: Graduations, honors and dean's lists

    Warwick - Local students continue to receive recognition for their academic successes at college and universities. Here is a summary of the latest student information to be received by The Photo News: • Christie Joy Haug, a resident of Highland Mills, was recently awarded the doctor of audiology degree by the School of Audiology at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She received a bachelor’s degree with honors in Speech and Hearing Science from the State University of New York at Cortland and a master’s degree in audiology from the University of Connecticut. She is the daughter of Jean and Kurt Haug of the town of Warwick and is a 1996 graduate of George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo. Haug currently works at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City where she is specialized in the area of cochlear implants. • Hannah Schiff of Warwick graduated May 28 from Brown University in Providence, R.I., with a bachelor’s degree in international relations. She is working for the summer at InterAction in Washington, D.C., as a public policy intern. InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations. With more than 160 members operating in every developing country, it works to overcome poverty, exclusion and suffering by advancing social justice and basic dignity for all. In September, Schiff will travel to Nicaragua, where she has accepted a three-month position teaching English. She is the daughter of Beth Kalet and David Schiff of Warwick. The University of Scranton conferred 1,260 graduate and undergraduate degrees at commencement ceremonies on May 28. Among the local graduates were: • Amy M. Brightbill, Sugar Loaf, BS, Biology. • Sarah H. Hayes, Warwick, BS, Counseling and Human Services. • Rachael R. Whalen, Florida, MS, Human Resource Administration. • Jesse Silver of Sugar Loaf received a bachelor of science degree in communication media in production during commencement ceremonies at Johnson & Wales University in Providence. R.I. The following students graduated from SUNY Orange in May: • Daralyn D. Hoffman, Greenwood Lake • Rachelle Marie Shipps, Greenwood Lake • Olga Shtaba, Greenwood Lake • Danielle I. Bugasch of Warwick has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester William Paterson University where she maintained a grade point average of 4.0. She also has been inducted into the Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society, which is described as the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the School of Education. Members of this honor society are selected on the basis of academic performance and professional standards. • Jonathan Robert Bugasch of Warwick has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. • Melissa Folkl of Florida was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at SUNY Cortland where she is studying elementary education. A 2004 graduate of S.S. Seward Institute, she is the daughter of Walter and Carol Folkl. • Leanne Finelli, a sophomore in the School of Education at Duquesne University, was named to the spring 2006 dean’s list, which recognizes students who maintain at least a 3.25 GPA. She is the daughter of Mike and Livia Finelli of Warwick. The following students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2006 semester. To qualify, students must achieve at least a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. • Linita Shannon of Florida, a junior majoring in sociology and television-radio-film. • Heather Knapp of Warwick, a senior majoring in anthropology. • David Villegas of Warwick, a freshman majoring in arts and sciences. Charles W. Moore III of Warwick was named to the dean’s list for Spring 2006 at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. To qualify for the list, freshmen must earn a 3.25 GPA and upperclassmen must earn a 3.5 GPA; they must also be enrolled full time. • Christina E. Yount, the daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth Yount in Warwick, has received the Marilyn E. Day Award at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. The award is given annually to a full-time student majoring in the Health and Physical Education Department for excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. She is a 2002 graduate of Beacon High School.
