College news: graduations and dean's lists

    News of the academic successes of area students continue to arrive into the newsroom. Here is a summary of the latest information: The following students have been named to the dean’s list of students for the spring semester at Alfred State College. Students from both the Alfred campus and the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville are selected for the list if they maintain a 3.50 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0. • Geoffrey Quackenbush, Pine Island. (The college also noted that Quackenbush carried a straight “A” grade point average.) • David Mapes, Central Valley • Sean Lowe, Harriman • Eric Helt, Monroe • Daniel Jessie, Monroe The following students earned degrees from the State University of New York at New Paltz at the college’s commencement ceremony on May 21: • Amy Chiapperino of Monroe received a CAS in Educational Administration. • Cynthia Mullan of Monroe received a MSED in Art Education. • Danielle Strommer of Monroe received a MSED in Art Education. Danielle Stack graduated summa cum laude from Marist College where she majored in Psychology/Special Ed/Elementary Education and received her Bachelor of Arts degree on May 20. She is a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Education National Honor Society and the Psi Chi Psychology National Honor Society. Over the summer, Danielle will be completing her Master’s Program in Educational Psychology which she has been working on since her junior year. The following students earned degrees from Lafayette College at commencement ceremonies May 20: • Marc Adam Gittleman of Harriman, A.B. Mathematics - Economics Cum Laude; Phi Beta Kappa; Omicron Delta Epsilon; Pi Mu Epsilon. • Rachel Beth Korn of Monroe, B.S. Mechanical Engineering. The following local students were awarded bachelor degrees at Manhattan College’s 164th undergraduate commencement on May 21: • Christina Marie Buyea of Harriman. • Melissa Tirado of Monroe. • Jillian Sameisky of Monroe. Miranda Whitney, a 2003 Warwick Valley High School graduate, was named to the president’s list at Southern New Hampshire University for outstanding academic achievement during the Spring 2006 semester. She is the daughter of Dennis and Shannah Whitney. Jason Knudsen of Florida was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at SUNY Cortland. A graduate of S.S. Seward Institute, Knudsen is majoring in business. He carried a 3.66 grade point average for the semester. Four area residents have been named to the deans’ list for the spring semester at SUNY Oswego. To be included on the list, students must have a semester grade average of 3.30 to 3.79. The students are: • Alison K. Maeng of New Milford, a junior. • Blake P. Dugandzic of Warwick, a senior studio art major. • Lauren L. Feldner of Warwick,, a senior human development major. • Melissa C. Stimpfle of Highland Mills, a sophomore studying studio art. First-year student James Chisolm Pearson of Tuxedo Park is a member of the Media Fellows Program, one of DePauw University’s programs of distinction for selected students. Media Fellows combine a liberal arts education with focused media studies during all four years of their undergraduate study. They serve a semester-long internship for academic credit at top news media and media-related organizations around the nation and world in order to gain real-work experience and establish professional contacts in the news media. J. Eliza Huberth, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Huberth of Monroe, played the role of Kate in the recent Kenyon College Musical Theater-Opera Workshop production of “The Pirates of Penzance” in Gambier, Ohio. A graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School, Huberth is a sophomore majoring in drama at Kenyon.
