Many local students have been recognized by their schools. Among them are: Robert P. Schmick, a graduate of Warwick Valley High School, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Arts and Humanities Education from New York University. His dissertation, “A Wilderness For All: The Transmutation and Transmittance of Wilderness Imagery For Antebellum Americans Through Print Media and Material Culture,” examined the contributions of fine art and literature as well as newspapers, wallpaper, lithographs, and rural cemeteries to an evolving American sensibility to nature in the early nineteenth-century. Presently, Schmick is completing a certificate in museum studies at Tufts University. Ashland University, Ohio, has named Warwick resident Bruce Mason a member of the university’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Phi Delta Theta was honored by AOPHA, the advocate for not-for-profit services for older Ohioans, with the Volunteer Service-Group Award for its service with The Good Shepherd Home in Ashland. He is the son of Bruce and Mary Mason, of Warwick. The following students were awarded degrees from Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Binghamton: Jason W. Dumm Warwick BA English. Adam J. Pellegrini Warwick BA English: Literature and Creative Writing. Margaret Sinclair Warwick BA Philosophy, Politics and Law. The College of Westchester inducted 25 Students into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society on Sept. 6. The Honor Society recognizes students who have excelled academically at two-year colleges. Chris Marshall of Central Valley was among the inductees. Tierney Crone, WVHS, has been awarded a Pro Arte Chorale scholarship by Pro Arte Chorale president Enid Hayflick, Ridgewood. Each high school senior auditioned with a classical aria, presented strong letters of recommendation for musical activities at school and in the community, underwent sight-singing tests, demonstrated pronunciation of foreign languages and were evaluated in ear training exercises to compete for this award. This year’s winners will be performing with the Chorale for the duration of the 2007 n 2008 Season and will receive a monetary award of $500 upon graduation.
