Chester — At the Chester Historical Society meeting last Sunday, the officers for 2006 were elected. Voted in were: Mary Altobelli as president, Lorraine Johanson as first vice president, Bill Schilling as second vice president, Fred Kronk as treasurer, and Stoddard as recording and corresponding secretary. After the meeting, Chester resident and author Kenneth Lifshitz gave a talk about Chester’s involvement in stopping the British Fleet from splitting the colonies in 1778. In addition to playing a pivotal role in the second and successful chain across the Hudson River, the contract signed on February 2nd, 1778 at Peter Townsend’s house in Chester was the first time the Federal government implimented quality control mechanisms in the procurement of military supplies, and is the model that is still in use to this day. The society meets at the 1915 Erie Station, which is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, from May to October.
