Cold packs or ice bags are used for the first 2-3 days for about 20 minutes every 2 hours. Heat can then be used for 20 minutes at a time too for 2-3 times per day.
Keep the ice and heat directly off your skin to avoid burns. A thin towel or clothing can be used between.
