I understand why I have to change my car's engine oil …but why the brake fluid?

Over the years here is what many people have said to me about changing their car's brake fluid: “The stuff lasts forever” and “It's one of those things the dealer tells you to do just so they can make money.”

The truth is that it is VERY important to change or flush the brake fluid. Over a period of time brake fluid absorbs moisture. This is harmful to internal brake hydraulics and internal ABS (Anti-lock brake) components. The moisture will corrode and pit the brakes' internal metal parts including calipers, master cylinders, ABS accumulators and modulators. This damage can result in expensive car repairs bills that are avoidable.

Another reason to change or flush brake fluid is safety. Consider this: you are driving down a steep incline and you are applying the brakes. Braking causes friction that in turn causes the brake fluid to get hot. Brake fluid actually has a much higher boiling point than water. But remember that brake fluid can absorb water over a period of time. So…old fluid that has absorbed moisture (water) is going to boil much sooner than fluid that has not been contaminated. The result is that the brake pedal can start to fade or get 'spongy” thus reducing your car's braking performance. If the brake fluid is heavily contaminated and the brakes are used extensively it is possible, in a few rare instances that the brake pedal has to be depressed almost completely to the floor.

Brake fluid is clear to yellowish in color. Dirty brake fluid gets dark from dirt and moisture over time. The specific brake fluid required by the manufacturer and when it should be replaced (service interval) is indicated in your owner's manual.

A complete brake system fluid flush can save you money and keep you safe.

For those standard transmission car owners: You should also have your clutch hydraulic fluid flushed for the same reasons (money and safety) particularly if you have a hydraulic activated clutch. These types of clutch hydraulics use the same system and fluid as your brakes.
