Yeah, yeah, yeah: Library sponsors Beatles lecture April 12

WARWICK The Albert Wisner Public Library will kick off National Library Week with a multimedia presentation highlighting the Beatles’ impact on the political, cultural, and social changes of the 1960s called, “You Say You Want A Revolution: John Lennon, The Beatles, and the Politics of the 1960s and 1970s” on April 12 at 7 p.m. at Warwick Town Hall. Dr. Terry Hamblin, an associate professor at SUNY Delhi, will be the guest speaker. The Beatles were one of the most popular and influential musical groups of the 20th Century. During the 1960s, they revolutionized and redefined the genre of rock music and had a tremendous impact on American youth and popular culture. During this time, the Beatles were also affected by the political and cultural changes of the era. Their music, which initially had been comprised of catchy love songs, evolved and began to reflect the more serious tone of the times. Beginning with the release “Rubber Soul” in 1965, the music of the Beatles began to address the more social, cultural, and political issues of the era. Subsequent releases delved further into these issues and addressed issues like the Vietnam War, the Summer of Love, and the Student protests of the 1960s. Through an examination of the music and the lyrics of the Beatles, Hamblin will explore how the Beatles reflected and influenced the various social, political, and cultural movements that emerged during this time. Registration is required and can be made by calling 986-1047.
