West Point Percussion Ensemble performs Sunday

    West Point — The United States Military Academy Band’s West Point Percussion Ensemble will present a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, in the Main Performance Room of Egner Hall, 685 Hardee Place. The West Point Percussion Ensemble is comprised of members from the concert band and field music group of The United States Military Academy Band. The ensemble performs a variety of music including standard and contemporary percussion literature, as well as compositions unique to the heritage of West Point. The performance will include the premiere of three new works for percussion ensemble. “4 Points West,” by Michael Burritt, was commissioned in 2005 by The West Point Percussion Ensemble and is scored for marimba quartet. Christopher Swist’s Percussion Quartet No. 1 links traditional and modern percussion ensemble writing through techniques pioneered by the great masters and new technology. Staff Sergeant Willie Calohan, of the Academy Band’s Hellcats, composed “Polygraph,” which is scored for five percussion and features Staff Sgt. Calohan on marimba and his wife, Kristen, on trumpet.
