Warwick — Jim and Michele Friel wanted to do something to help the families of soldiers who are oversees. They know this war has been long and trying on the families, as well as those who do not have connections to anyone serving in the military. “Our daughter’s best friend’s husband was in Iraq for a year,” said Michele Friel. “He came home safely but while he was gone, his wife felt so lonely. She didn’t have the support she needed.” That’s when it occurred to her that maybe she and her family could give that support. The Friels decided to open their home on Sunday evenings from 7-9 p.m. to anyone who needs comfort surrounding the war in Iraq. “We want them to know we appreciate them and what their loved ones are doing for the freedoms we all too often take for granted,” said Michele, noting that neither she nor her husband served in the armed forces. “This is also a support group for people who lost loved ones in the war and for those who have returned from war, too.” Michele said she knows that families feel very alone and discouraged. Their children, too, might be overwhelmed by the war. Even if you have no one in the military, Michele said you are welcome to her house to get comfort. “We are going to be looking to God and the Bible for comfort, strength, and direction,” said Michele. “We are not a church and we love all people. Everyone is welcome.” The Friels have a 10-year-old daughter and a 23-year-old daughter. Kids are welcome and refreshments will be served. “We will have fun things for their children to do,” added Michele. “ And we will make our guests feel as welcome as we can.” Anyone who would like to participate in the support group may contact Michele Friel at 987-9705.
