Warwick author publishes new book
WARWICK — The World Federation of Neurology defines dyslexia as "a disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence and sociocultural opportunity."
And what would you do if you learned that you were dyslexic?
"You would write a book," said Richard "Dick" Kraemer, author of, "Dyslexic Dick, True Adventures of My World."
Kraemer, a Warwick resident, grew up in Monroe-Woodbury and Greenwood Lake. And all his life he struggled with reading and writing. The problem was that he didn't know he had dyslexia.
In his autobiography, Dyslexic Dick - True Adventures of MyWorld, he explained that he thought he just had a bad case of "stupidity."
Two years later, Kraemer has published the second book of the series, "Dyslexic Dick II: The Marine Corps Truly Uncommon Experience."
Kraemer explained that the new book is a humorous, adventurous, and emotional account of his experiences as a Marine. But he added that it also tells what happens when things are not so honorable.
"It is unlike any other story you'll ever read about the Marines," he said. "After writing my first autobiography of the series about my young life, I realized I had many more amazingly true stories to tell my way. What convinced me to write the next book was the feedback and reviews."
Kraemer said that the Marine Corps and his dyslexia have helped him achieve great things in life. But he added that being a dyslexic Marine does have its drawbacks.
"Don't look for a John Wayne type character," he cautioned, "This story is a humorous, adventurous, and emotional account of my experiences as a Marine. I talk about being pulled from basic training, and shipped to the dark side of Paris Island. It's about romance, lust, love, and heartbreak. You'll read what it's really like to travel around the world on a Navy ship, seeing ports of call. The story is nothing like one told before. I tell of my accomplishments as a Marine, and also write about criminal activity in our barracks and on the open seas."
