Pine Bush — The Wallkill River School, an artists’ collective that specializes in regional landscapes, is coming in out of the cold. The group usually paints in the French plein air (“open air”) style, referring to landscapes that catch fleeting impressions out of doors. But the group is moving to warmer winter quarters by offering workshops at three indoor locations in Orange County. The first series of workshops is offered at the Pine Bush Cultural Center at 62 Main St. in Pine Bush. Shawn Dell Joyce will teach a beginning drawing class based on Betty Edward’s “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.” This workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on eight Saturday afternoon sessions from Jan. 6 through Feb. 24. The fee of $150 includes materials. Joyce will teach drawing through its five basic components: value, line, perspective, proportion, and gestalt. The same workshop is also offered by Joyce on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 7 to Feb. 25, at the Wallkill River Art Gallery in New Windsor, 357 Old Forge Hill Rd. Artist and writer Patricia Dunn from Sparrowbush will lead participants on a spiritual path to higher creativity through a workshop based on the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. This 12-week workshop will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. noon, Jan. 6 through Mar. 24, at the Pine Bush Cultural Center. The cost is $150. Steve Blumenthal is offering a “Beginning Painting” workshop at the Wallkill River Art Gallery in New Windsor on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 7 through Feb. 18, for $150. Blumenthal will lead the novice through basics like composition, value, and color mixing. The workshop is open to any medium like watercolor, pastel, oil, acrylic and will be based on still-life, floral, and photos. These artists and Gene Bové will offer more workshops in March.
