West Point — The United States Military Academy Band’s chamber music series will present the West Point Saxophone Quartet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, in a recital of music by contemporary composers. The quartet includes Sgt. 1st Class Wayne Tice, and Staff Sgts. Christopher Rettie, Brian Broelmann, and James McCain. The free concert at the West Point Jewish Chapel will open with Perry Goldstein’s “Motherless Child Variations”, a composition based on the African-American spiritual, “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” The newest member of the ensemble, McCain will perform selected movements from “Sweet!” by Cory Kasprzyk, accompanied by Daniel Spiegel on piano. Tice will perform Fuminori Tanada’s “Mysterious Morning III” for solo soprano saxophone, whose improvisatory style creates the image of a man quivering with madness. “Spiegel im Spiegel,” by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, will be performed by Broelmann on tenor saxophone and Staff Sgt. Scott Arcangel on piano. The recital will close with a quartet performance of Perry Goldstein’s “Pieces of Elsewhere,” a multi-movement work dedicated to the Prism Quartet, Aurelia Quartet, and the West Point Saxophone Quartet. Founded in 1965, the West Point Saxophone Quartet, formally known as the Hudson Valley Saxophone Quartet, consists of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. The ensemble performs a wide variety of music within the classical, jazz and popular idioms, and exposes its audience to the technical virtuosity, tonal beauty and versatility of which the saxophone family is capable.
