Ukrainian dance at college

Middletown A celebration of Ukrainian heritage and culture will be presented through the art of dance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, in Orange Hall Theater at Orange County Community College in Middletown. The Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble will perform traditional Ukrainian folk dances in full costume. Some dances will demonstrate the influence of modern dance, including hip-hop, as the dance company tries to preserve the rich traditions of Ukrainian folk dance while broadening the range of expression through new and unique choreographies. Originated by the late and internationally recognized prima ballerina and choreographer Roma Pryma Bohachevsky, the ensemble has performed throughout the United States at Lincoln Center; the Brooklyn Academy of Music; the Felt Forum of Madison Square Garden; Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C.; and the Academy of Music and Robin Hood Dell East, Philadelphia. The ensemble is now led by Roma’s daughter, Ania Bohachevsky Lokvych, along with artistic director Andrij Cybyk. Tickets are available in the College Commons Student Life counter, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and SUNY Orange alumni, and free for all students. Group rates are available.
