Trumpet and organs

WEST POINT — Staff Sergeant Bill Owens, associate principal trumpet player with the West Point Band, will perform a recital of trumpet and organ transcriptions from the Renaissance and Baroque eras on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m.
He will be joined by Craig Williams, the United State Military Academy's organist and choirmaster playing the Cadet Chapel organ.
Solo organ works will also be included on the program.
West Point’s Cadet Chapel has the world’s largest church pipe organ numbering more 23,500 pipes in a splendid cathedral sanctuary measuring more than 200 feet long.
The organ pipes fill the space from the massive six-tier galleries in the front to the horizontal trumpets in the back. This organ is heard by thousands of visitors every year including heads of state, members of Congress, cabinet members and foreign dignitaries.
Owens received his bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School in 2005 and has since performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony and the Santa Barbara Symphony in addition to numerous other orchestras in Southern California.
For six years, he was a member of the national touring ensemble, Presidio Brass. While maintaining a busy performing schedule with Presidio, Owens and organist Alison Leudecke performed similar recitals in venues throughout California.
This trumpet and organ concert is free and open to the general public. A freewill offering will be accepted.
Allow extra travel time for vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
