Trombone ensemble performs Sunday in Highland Mills
Highland Mills - The “Hudson Highlands Trombone Ensemble” from the United States Military Academy at West Point will perform in concert on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 3:30 p.m., at the Highland Mills United Methodist Church . The concert is free and open to the public. The church is located on Route 32 at Ridge Road in Highland Mills. Following the concert, there will be a potluck supper. For more information, call 928-6177. The Hudson Highlands Trombone Ensemble was formed in October 2005, comprised of members of the USMA Concert Band and Jazz Knights. Although primarily a quartet, the ensemble will add members to accommodate larger trombone works and percussion to facilitate their flexibility. They perform music from all genres. The members are: Sergeant First Class Teddy Arnold is currently the bass trombonist for the Jazz Knights, a position he has held since September 2001. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Arnold entered the Army 1985. His military service has taken him around the globe in performance with many Army bands. His assignments have included the United States Army Band & Chorus, based in Heidelberg, Germany; the 82nd Airborne Division Band at Ft. Bragg, N. C., and the former 14th Army Band at Ft. McClellan, Ala. In 1989, Arnold was an honor graduate of the Armed Forces School of Music at Little Creek, Va. He also attended Methodist College and Fayetteville State University studying music. Arnold has studied with Telarc recording artist Steve Turre (Saturday Night Live), Slide Hampton (World of Trombones), Douglas Purviance (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) and Benny Powell (formally of the Count Basie Orchestra). He has performed with many artists in various styles to include Latin, Broadway shows and jazz. Sergeant First Class Martin Tyce is from Rock Springs, Wy. He became a member of the USMA Band in 1989 after receiving his bachelor of arts degree in music performance from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Tyce has studied with Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist on the New York Philharmonic, and is currently studying with Matt Ingman in New York City. He completed a master’s degree in counseling from Long Island University, C.W. Post, in 1996. Tyce also is an adjunct faculty member at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, directing the brass and jazz ensembles. Staff Sergeant Barry Morrison, from Montgomery, Ala., joined the U.S. Military Academy Band in April 1987. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Alabama and a Master of Music degree from Texas A & M University at Commerce. Prior to joining the band, Morrison taught in the public schools of Alabama and Texas. When not performing his Army duties, he serves as conductor of the Rhinebeck Legion Band. Staff Sergeant Philip Stehly joined the Academy Band in the summer 2005. A native of Kansas City, he received a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from Indiana University. While at Indiana, he was the principal trombonist of the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Ray Cramer.
