Training available in April for literacy volunteers
Middletown - Literacy Volunteers of Western Orange County will offer its spring tutor-training workshop in Southwinds at 70 Fulton Street in Middletown later this month. According the group’s promotional material, adults who understand and speak English are taught to read and write the language. Adult speakers of other languages are taught to understand, speak, read and write English. The spring workshop will train only basic-literacy tutors those who will be teaching students that already understand and speak English. Attendance is required at one of the two orientation sessions to be held at Southwinds: Tuesday, April 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. or Saturday, April 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The workshop will be held Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, April 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone considering becoming a trained English tutor is urged to call the Literacy Volunteers at 341-5460 or e-mail baclvwoc@warwick.net by April 19 to register, giving name, telephone number and postal mailing address. “If you can read, you can teach someone else to read,” said Tony Houston, the group’s director.
