— The Greenwood Lake Public Library’s Art Gallery will be showing the works of photographer Renelle Lorray for the month of January.
Born in Paterson, N.J., Lorray graduated from Boonton High School and attended Long Island University in Brooklyn on a biology scholarship. She started working part time at A&S department store, leaving LIU to enroll in the A&S buying program.
After 10 years in retail, she began worked administratively for a plumbing contractor. After his retirement, Lorray worked 27 years for another contractor as the accounting and personnel manager, recently retiring last year.
Lorray inherited her painterly vision from her father, who has degrees in art and music, and loved to collect paintings.
While in her teens, her parents bought property in Warwick and this became a backdrop to draw from.
While in retail, Lorray bought herself a camera. She photographed trips to the Grand Canyon in the early 1970’s and England in 1998.
In 2007, Lorray moved into digital photography. In particular, she had become interested in life cycles of various creatures that inhabit or visit her property.
She will explore locations close to home, capturing the details that make up the whole picture.
She has found that people enjoy “looking at and making a connection with what’s familiar - just presented in a different light.”
Lorray has sold her prints at craft fairs such as Art on the Green. She is a member of the Warwick Art League, the Orange County Arts Council and the Goshen Art League. Her work has been shown at the Albert Wisner Public Library, SUNY Orange in Middletown, Goshen Music Hall, Brotherhood Winery, Ringwood Manor Gallery, The Big Draw (pop-up event in Beacon), Upstream Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson and the Wickham Works Made Local Holiday Market, among others.
Lorray also participated in the Open Art Studio Tour for the past several years and was a hub location for this year’s tour.
Lorray is currently doing a group of "stories" with an overall theme "Shades of Winter."
