Symphonic band to close spring with April 28 concert
MIDDLETOWN A mix of Robert Russell Bennett and Richard Rodgers arrangements, along with selected dance music, will headline the SUNY Orange Symphonic Band’s spring concert, slated for 8 p.m., Friday, April 28, at the Paramount Theater in Middletown. This show will mark the band’s first performance at the historic downtown theater, located at 17 South St., under a collaborative agreement between the City of Middletown and the college. The band, comprised of students from Orange County Community College and members of the community from middle school age to senior citizens, is under the direction of Kevin Scott. The band was originally scheduled to debut at the Paramount in mid March, but the concert was cancelled due to a snowstorm. Scott has handpicked songs from that show, “Go for Baroque, and Dance!” for inclusion in the upcoming spring performance. Additionally, the group will showcase Bennett’s symphonic scenarios from Rodgers’ “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music,” selections from Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances” and Handel’s “Water Music,” as well as Norman Dello Joio’s “Satiric Dances” and John Cacavas’ “Americana Two-Step.” Admission is free, but the Arts and Communication Department suggests a $5 donation. Musicians interested in playing in the band should contact Scott for an audition. He is interested in musicians who play flute, clarinet, trumpet and percussion. The band meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Paramount. Musicians must have their own instrument.
