SUNY Orange to offer course on the history of the Hudson Valley

NEWBURGH — Area residents are invited to learn about the history of the Hudson Valley from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday mornings in late January and February as SUNY Orange’s continuing and professional development program offers a non-credit course at the college’s Newburgh campus.
The “Hudson Valley History I” course, set to begin Jan. 26 and run through Feb. 23 (no class will be held on Feb. 16) in Room 207 of Kaplan Hall, will cover how modern towns developed in the Hudson River Valley, from the early Dutch, French, English and Native American settlements.
Attendees will discuss local folklore and colorful characters of the region, including Henry Hudson, Benedict Arnold, Sybil Ludington, Major John Andre, Daniel Nimham and Henry Wells, among others.
Instructor Leon DiMartino is an experienced presenter who earned a bachelor’s degree from Pace University and a master’s degree from Fordham University in history and education.
A follow-up course, “Hudson Valley History II” will be held on Saturdays in March for those who participate in the initial class and may be interested in continuing their investigation of the region’s heritage.
