SUNY Orange Symphonic Band's holiday concert at The Paramount

MIDDLETOWN — The SUNY Orange Symphonic Band will conduct its annual holiday concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14 at Middletown's Paramount Theatre. The evening's program will feature a performance by flutist Danielle Parisi, narration by Shelly Kornher and the debut of student resident conductor Kevin Coffey.

The concert will open with the first performance of "Benjamin Overture" by noted Hudson Valley composer Dr. Craig Morris. Morris' music has been performed by several orchestras, including the Bronx Symphony, Orchestra Society of Philadelphia and the Brno Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, and his violin concerto has been recorded by Parma Records. A resident of New City, Morris is also a distinguished psychologist.

Parisi, of Newburgh, will perform Pietro Morlacchi's "The Swiss Shepherd" in an arrangement for flute and concert band by Nora Kile. Parisi, a first-year visual communications student at SUNY Orange, performed the Morlacchi during the band's 2013 summer concert series.

The program will feature the first official appearance by Coffey, the band's resident conductor. A first-year SUNY Orange student from Montgomery majoring in music performance, Coffey will lead the ensemble in Sean O'Loughlin's "Imani," as well as James L. Hosay's "For Unto You is Born This Day," which will also feature narration by Kornher, a student performer with the SUNY Orange Apprentice Players. Kornher, of Bloomingburg, has received accolades for her performances with the Apprentice Players in Sarah Kane's "4:48 Psychosis" and Caryl Churchill's "Cloud 9."

Rounding out the program is Alan Silvestri's symphonic suite from the motion picture "The Polar Express," Sammy Nestico's "A Fireside Christmas," Calvin Custer's "Hanukkah is Here" and Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival."

The SUNY Orange Symphonic Band is comprised of students and members of the community.

The concert is sponsored by the College's Arts and Communication Department.

General admission is $5. SUNY Orange students with a current ID and active military personnel will be admitted free. The Paramount Theatre, located at

17 South St. in Middletown, is universally accessible.
