Sugarloaf Music Series continues to support New Orleans' performing artists
Sugar Loaf In its ongoing commitment to help performing artists from Hurrican Katrina-torn New Orleans, the Sugarloaf Music Series will present, in their first-ever Hudson Valley appearance, Three-Legged Dog performing artists, The Malvinas. The Malvinas will perform one concert only, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 in the Pavilion of the Lycian Performing Arts Center, Kings Highway, Sugar Loaf. Jon Stein from WTBQ will serve as master-of-ceremonies for the performance and all proceeds go to the artists. The Malvinas, a feminist trio, perform a feisty blend of jazz, traditional and folk-pop music. With roots all over North America, The Malvinas pull together a broad palette of regional colors, including the blues-tinged grooves of the deep South, the spicy Cajun flavours of Louisiana, the Celtic modes of Eastern Canada and the libertarian troubadour tradition of the Lone Star State. Alternating lead vocalists, tight harmonies and quirky instrumentation - dobro, guitar, tenor guitar, mandolins and violin - create a high energy sound that never forgets that to make great music, one must start with a great song. The trio is named after singer/songwriter and social activist Malvina Reynolds, whose culturally and politically charged songs focused on women’s and workers’ rights, social justice and the environment. This concert is made possible in part from funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, community grants from Orange and Rockland Utilities, The Puffin Foundation, Target Stores and Provident Bank. Tickets are available at Village Music in Warwick and Van Gelder Music in Monroe. For information and reservations, call 845 258-3019.
