Sugar Loaf Music Series kicks off Sunday

| 25 Sep 2013 | 10:27

— This Sunday begins the Sugar Loaf Music Series with jazz guitarists Vic Juris and Bob Devos.

The Sugar Loaf Music Series presents jazz and folk artists in the intimate bucolic setting of the former estate of renown artist Kurt Seligmann.

A native of Jersey City, N.J., Juris took up guitar at age 10. By the mid-’60s he was playing cover versions of Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Temptations material in rock and R&B bands around his area. He discovered jazz in his late teens and subsequently studied with Philly jazz guitar legend Pat Martino.

For the past 10 years, Juris has been hitting the road with the Dave Liebman Group.

Devos started in jazz as a student of Harry Leahy and the legendary Dennis Sandole. In 1970, when Sandole sent his leading students out to audition for organist Trudy Pitts, Devos was chosen to step in for Pat Martino. He went on to be the guitarist for groups led by Richard "Groove" Holmes, featuring saxophone legend Sonny Stitt, and Jimmy McGriff and Hank Crawford.

Shows continue in October, November and April.

On Oct. 20, jazz guitarist Dave Stryker and bassist Jay Anderson are spotlighted.

Jack Wilkins and Harvie S. roll into the series on Nov. 17.

On April 6, folk artist John Flynn headlines.

The shows begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 for individual shows or $80 for the entire series of four.
