Sugar Loaf Methodist to hold 90th annual church fair

The Sugar Loaf United Methodist Church will hold its 90th Annual Church Fair on Saturday, Sept. 9th, rain or shine. The historic Greek revival church is located on Kings Highway in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf. The Fair will open at 10 a.m. with the traditional ringing of the bell and will end at 4 p.m. In past years, the line of fair-goers has stretched out to the highway as people wait to check out the bargains in the white elephant booth, buy a delicious pie, or purchase a hand woven rug. Food is the main attraction for many of those attending the fair and this year will offer something for everyone’s taste. There will be hundreds of pies along with home-baked breads, cakes, and cookies. Another booth will offer homemade candy, jams and jellies, doggie treats, and gifts in a jar. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and taco salad will be available for lunch at the snack bar. The Bicentennial Cookbook published in 2004 will be on sale. The church has a very active and dedicated group of crafters who work throughout the year making each of the items for sale at the fair. Old-fashioned fancywork will include quilts, hand-knit sweaters, American Girl doll clothes, baby items, and rag rugs. There will be a selection of Christmas and Halloween decorations, toys for children, and items for home and garden. The white elephant booth is sure to offer lots of “treasures” for very little money. There will also be produce, plants, and mums for sale. The annual raffle will feature a beautiful handmade quilt, a large copper roof birdhouse, and a hand carved pair of pheasants. Entertainment will be provided by the Penny Loafer Band from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call Jane Gareiss at 986-4557.
