String Trio of NY hosts workshop, then free jazz concert March 2

MIDDLETOWN - The String Trio of New York will be at SUNY Orange on Friday, March 2, to conduct a student workshop in the afternoon and perform a free concert at 8 p.m. that night in the College’s Orange Hall Theater. Considered one of the nation’s pre-eminent jazz string ensembles, musicians John Lindberg, Rob Thomas and James Emery combined their unique blend of jazz and contemporary music with a commitment to education and musical outreach programs. The group will conduct a workshop with SUNY Orange students at noon in Orange Hall in advance of that evening’s performance. The evening concert will include a broad repertoire of original works, commissioned pieces by diverse contemporary composers and original arrangements of classic jazz compositions. The String Trio of New York has released 16 albums, many of which have garnered critical acclaim. Lindberg has toured worldwide and has released 25 solo albums featuring his work on the bass, while Thomas has carved a reputation as one of the most highly regarded jazz violinists of his generation. Emery, who plays guitar, has performed in more than 25 countries. In 2003-04, the Trio presented a highly successful joint residency program at SUNY Ulster and in the town of Warwick, which totaled 23 events over nine months. For information, call 341-4787.
