String Trio of New York will perform June 24 at Amity Gallery

WARWICK — The String Trio of New York, the internationally renowned chamber jazz ensemble, will perform a concert at the Amity Gallery on Saturday, June 24, at 7 p.m.
Since its formation in 1977, the String Trio of New York has been delighting audiences around the world with its fresh acoustic improvisations and compositions for violin, guitar and bass.
According to The New York Times, the trio “played jazz that was as rhythmically alive, stylistically varied and consistently inventive as anything this listener has heard recently.”
In performance, the String Trio takes the spontaneous and creative nature of improvisation and joins it to thoughtful and challenging composed material in a variety of ways.
Fortieth anniversary seasonThe trio features guitarist James Emery, a Warwick resident, violinist Rob Thomas and bassist Tony Marino.
They have developed a unique, personal sound and a musical essence which is immediately recognizable. This element has been noted by critic Nat Hentoff, who observed “One of Duke Ellington’s favorite ways of bestowing praise was to describe a player or group as being ‘beyond category’. The phrase befits the String Trio of New York and, for that matter, each of its players.”
In 2018, the trio will celebrate its fortieth anniversary season as a vital unit committed to the cutting-edge of creative performances.
Called “one of the most important jazz ensembles of recent times” by Brian Morton (Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD), the trio has released 18 critically acclaimed CDs and LPs. International jazz festival appearances include Berlin, Paris, Vancouver, Toronto, Zurich and Warsaw.
In the U.S., the Trio has appeared at major performing arts venues including the Walker Arts Center, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series, the Smithsonian Institution, Houston's Da Camera Society, the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, San Francisco's Herbst Theater, Wolf Trap, and the Ravinia, Mellon, and Newport Jazz Festivals among many others.
