Stained glass meets steel drums in concert Sunday

Highland Falls - Staff Sgt. Rone Sparrow and eight members of the United States Military Academy Steel Drum Band will present “Traditional Music from Trinidad” on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m., as part of the Stained-Glass Concert Series at Holy Innocents Church, 401 Main St., Highland Falls. The percussionists also will present a couple of crowd favorites, including Jimmy Buffet’s “Wasted Away in Margaritaville.” Originally from Fairfield, Calif.,, Sparrow earned a bachelors degree in percussion performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University in 1997 and a masters degree in percussion performance from The University of North Texas in 2000. While at North Texas, he taught percussion methods classes, directed percussion ensembles, instructed in the percussion studio, and was the coordinator for the University of North Texas Green Brigade drum line. His diverse freelance career includes performances with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Sundance Summer Theater, the Drifters, the Jerry Floor Big Band and the Walt Disney Corporation. Sparrow joined the USMA Band in August 2002 and has been featured with the band on steel pans, piano, and mallet percussion.
