WARWICK —As part of its ongoing commitment to improving the quality of healthcare for the Warwick community, St. Anthony Community Hospital, a member of Bon Secours Charity Health System, has been hosting a three part series of health education lectures by Dr. Robert Feldman, a Board Certified Surgeon affiliated with the hospital. The subjects of the monthly presentations, which began in September and will continue through October and November, involve the treatment of vein disorders, breast cancer and laparoscopic hernia repair. In September, Feldman offered his first presentation on Varicose Veins and, in particular, on Sclerotherapy, an injection treatment used to eliminate “spider” veins. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Feldman, who is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, will return to discuss the subject of breast cancer. During his upcoming lecture, Feldman plans to cover reducing risks for Breast Cancer along with prevention, detection and new advances in treatment options. “Mammography, for example, is an excellent tool for the early detection of breast abnormalities,” he said, “but it is usually not possible to tell from the imaging studies alone whether a growth is benign or cancerous.” To make this determination, he explained, it is necessary to obtain a tissue sample for microscopic examination. Now there is a less invasive alternative to open surgical biopsy known as stereotactic biopsy whereby a special computerized mammography machine pinpoints the area of tissue change. Immediately after his presentation, Feldman, will answer specific questions from the audience. The lecture, which begins at 7 p.m., will be held in the Greenbriar Room at Mount Alverno Center, 20 Grand Ave., Warwick. Mount Alverno is approximately two blocks past St. Anthony Community Hospital. Ample parking is available.
