West Point - Direct from South Africa and singing music from their newly released CD “Blessed,” the Soweto Gospel Choir will appear at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, at the Eisenhower Hall Theatre in West Point. The South African musical phenomenon has proven to be a musical force that transcends cultural boundaries and connects with diverse audiences through their music. The exuberant voices are filling an important void, as they spread a message of love, joy and hope to audiences around the world. Formed to celebrate the unique, inspirational tradition of African gospel music, the choir has won support from Nelson Mandela, as well as Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the choir’s patron. Their January 2005 release of “Voices from Heaven,” from Shanachie Entertainment, hit number one on the Billboard World Music charts, and the top five of CMJ’s World Music charts. According to Oprah Magazine, “The Soweto Gospel Choir makes our world seem beautifully small … The 26-member group performs in six languages, blending traditional hymns, Western pop, and their native South African harmonies into a singularly, joyful sound.” For more information about the choir, visit www.sowetogospelchoir.com.
