Sign language theater coming to the Lycian
Sugar Loaf Kings Theatre Company is offering the community a chance to experience theater in a new way. Sign Stage On Tour, a company of deaf and hearing actors, will be performing Roald Dahl’s classic family story “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” at the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf, on Friday, April 13, at 9:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. In the same tradition as “The Adventures of Peter Rabbit,” this is a garden tale of farmer versus vermin, or vice versa. Due to the tyrannical nature of the three local farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, Mr. Fox finds himself unable to feed his wife and their three young fox cubs. Other animals in the area are similarly affected. Just as they are all sure to die of starvation, the ingenious Mr. Fox hatches a remarkable plan that will not only get them food, but take care of those horrible farmers for good. Sign Stage on Tour is a specialist in Sign Language Theatre, where deaf and hearing actors perform together on stage. Whenever a character speaks, the character speaking uses Sign Language but you’ll hear the voice regardless of where or who it comes from. The voice comes from a different actor speaking through a microphone, sometimes on-stage and sometimes off-stage. Visually, the stage is filled with the movement of hands and bodies, yet every word is spoken to make sure all audience members, both deaf and hearing, don’t miss a thing. It’s a magical blend of language created when performing a play in the spatial beauty of American Sign Language and English, simultaneously. Kings Theatre Company presents performances by Sign Stage On Tour every season for the benefit of local school groups and youth organizations - this is the first time it is being offered to the general community as well.
