Sgambati art gallery celebrates official grand opening

— Artist Elaine Sgambati officially opened her fine art gallery last Friday, surrounded by members of her family as well as local public officials and chamber representatives.

The gallery is devoted to her original oil paintings and limited edition Gicleés influenced by the Dutch Masters, including figurative work, floral, still-life, seascape and commissioned portraits displayed in an intimate salon type setting.

The Sgambati Gallery first opened last fall but since that time there’s been an important change: Elaine Sgambati is now also offering oil painting classes for adults.

The emphasis in class will be learning to see with a painter’s eye into the nature of things and to give life to ordinary objects by painting the color that stems from a prismatic flow of light.

Students will be working in oils in the tradition of the Old Masters. And there is no need to buy supplies as the use of school arts supplies is included in the fee. Students at all levels of experience in this medium can be accepted. However, due to space limitations only four students per class will be registered allowing the student more personalized instruction and attention.

A Master Contemporary Impressionist

Sgambati is the founder and owner of the Riverview Art School and Gallery in Island Heights, N.J. She recently moved to Warwick, the inspiration of many of her landscape paintings.

Her teaching experience includes 17 years at the Ridgewood Art Institute and nine years at the Ocean County Artist Guild in New Jersey before opening her own studio in Island Heights, where she taught for 18 years.

Sgambati, self-taught since she was three years old, began her formal art training at the Ridgewood Art Studio when she turned 21. And four years later she was invited to join the faculty.

Considered by curators and gallery owners a Master Contemporary Impressionist, Sgambati paints landscapes in the tradition of the Hudson River School painters. Her other subject matter includes still-life, floral, seascape, figurative and commissioned portraits as well as commissioned pastoral scenes including farm animals.

Through the years she has been the recipient of many first-place awards and is represented by galleries and in public and private collections in this country and abroad.

Sgambati is a member of Oil Painters of America, Orange County Arts Council and the Ridgewood Art Institute.
