WARWICK — The Orange County Support Group of the Tri State Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation will meet at St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick on Saturday, Jan. 25, beginning at 10 a.m. Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The word “scleroderma” comes from two Greek words: “sclero” meaning hard, and “derma” meaning skin. Hardening of the skin is one of the most visible manifestations of the disease. The symptoms of scleroderma, however, vary greatly from individual to individual.. At the present time, there is no known cure for scleroderma but there are many treatments available. “We may share some of our bad experiences on occasion but generally our group, which includes individuals with a diversity of experiences and symptoms, tries to be upbeat,” said Fran Batz, co-chair, who has dealt with her scleroderma for over 40 years. “ The support group meetings often include guest speakers and video presentations of recent Scleroderma Foundation conferences. Members may also borrow these videos for home viewing. The organization meets on the fourth Saturday of every month from January through October. To become a member or attend a support group meeting, call Fran Batz at: 986-4451 or email: batz@warwick.net.
