West Point — The United States Military Academy Band continues its chamber music series at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21 with a recital of music for saxophone and piano. Staff Sgt. Brian Broelmann will perform a varied program of works for saxophone, accompanied by Danniel Spiegel in West Point’s Jewish Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. Broelmann has chosen a program which will highlight the diversity of works available to the concert saxophonist. The recital will feature two works transcribed for saxophone and piano. Maurice Ravel’s “Piece en forme” de Habanera, arranged for soprano saxophone and piano, will open the performance. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Six Studies in English Folk Song,” arranged for alto saxophone and piano, will close the program. Both pieces are representative of the more lyrical approach to the saxophone. These works will be contrasted with the remainder of the program. Christian Lauba’s “Tadj,” for solo soprano saxophone, is a concert etude that explores the more exotic and virtuosic sounds attainable on the soprano saxophone. Spiegel will also join Broelmann for a performance of Leslie Bassett’s Duo Concertante. This is a multi-movement work in which the alto saxophone and piano assume roles of equal importance, utilizing a unique interplay between voices. The most adventurous work on the program is French composer Jean-Claude Risset’s “Voilemente” for tenor saxophone and electronic tape. The work explores the interaction of live saxophonist with processed acoustic sounds on tape. Attendees should allow extra travel time for the vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
