Middletown — Penny Howell Jolly, PhD, art historian, will present a lecture with Powerpoint, entitled “Renaissance Florence: the Medici as Patrons of Art,” on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:45 a.m. Jolly is a professor of art history and holds the William R. Kenan Chair for Liberal Arts, at Skidmore College. She will give an overview of the huge number of artworks commissioned in 15th century Florence by the Medici family and will focus on the patronage of Cosimo through his grandson Lorenzo the Magnificent, and the Medici family’s relationship to the city, to politics, and to culture, speaking on specific monuments commissioned by them, including the Medici Palace and some of its internal decoration. In addition, she will provide more in depth information on Fra Angelico and the monastery of San Marco Pazzi Conspiracy and Botticelli’s Primavera. The presentation will take place in Orange Hall Theater, on the SUNY Orange campus, Middletown, as part of Cultural Affairs’ diverse selection of topics for its Lyceum Lecture Series during this winter-spring semester. The other lecture, in March, will be on 15th century women writers of the Italian Renaissance. Lectures are free and open to the public.
