WARWICK— The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Orange County and Warwick Valley Central School District will kick off the 2006 Red Ribbon 21st anniversary campaign on Monday, Oct. 23. This year the Warwick Valley High School will host the Kick-Off Ceremony at 10 a.m. with students, school administrators, teachers, legislators, law enforcement agents and dignitaries from across Orange County attending. The Kick-Off Ceremony will feature students and others speaking about their experiences with drug abuse, as well as a special program developed by the Red Ribbon Campaign members. Red Ribbon is a national drug abuse awareness campaign that was formed to memorialize the life of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camerena. In 1985, Enrique was kidnapped, tortured and killed by Mexican drug traffickers. For the past 20 years, communities across America have celebrated his life with special events and by wearing red ribbons from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31.
