Prayer Labyrinth open to all on Good Friday in Pine Island

PINE ISLAND — Vision Community Church will make a Prayer Labyrinth available to anyone who would like to walk the 30-foot labyrinth in the gymnasium at Pine Island Elementary School between 4 and 7 p.m. on Good Friday, April 18.

“Walking prayer is an ancient Christian form of meditation,” the Rev. Carolyn Keith, pastor at Vision, said in the church's press release announcing the service. “Some of the earliest Christian labyrinths, such as the one at the Cathedral at Chartres, began so that local people could make a symbolic journey to Jerusalem. Since then, many Christian traditions have embraced the idea of ‘walking prayer’ and meditation as a special way to reverence God.”

This year, St. Paul’s Chapel in Manhattan, the Episcopal Church across from the site of the World Trade Center, has also had a Lenten Labyrinth open for all visitors.

The Prayer Labyrinth that will be at Vision Church on Good Friday, will be open for anyone in the community to drop in. Cards with simple instructions will be available at the door.

Vision Community Church is a Protestant Christian Church with a congregation who believe in putting their faith to work.

Among their missions are the monthly community dinners, a clothing bank that has given away over $90,000 in free clothing and home goods, and a thrift shop, all at Pine Island Elementary.

Services are at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings, with a special breakfast at 9:15 on Easter Sunday.
