Open Mic this Friday night at community center
WARWICK - VISION Community Church is hosting its fifth Open Mic on Friday, June 9, from 7 - 10 p.m., for local teen bands at Warwick Valley (Doc Fry) Community Center. This quarterly event is held as a fund raiser to benefit summer WorkCamp, Youth Ministries and Missions at Vision Community Church. It also is a venue for local talent. During the three-hour Open Mic event, each of the five participating bands plays 20-25 minute sets. There is a $5 cover charge. There will be snacks, drinks and Warwick business-sponsored door prizes. Musicians and merchants interested in participating may contact Caroline Beischer for details at 986-5883. As a result of successful fund raising throughout the year, Vision Community Church has arranged for 30 people to participate in the July 9-14 session of Group WorkCamp, in Canandiagua. For the past two years, Vision and community volunteers have traveled to Lockport and Utica to repair homes for those in need. This mission trip is open to all those ages 12-21. Adults are needed as well. The area of focus this year is the local Veterans Hospital, which has been hampered by budget cuts so they depend heavily on volunteers. Group WorkCamp began in 1976 in response to severe flooding in Colorado. Volunteers came to the aid of the devastated area. Thirty years and six million volunteer hours later, the work continues to rebuild, enrich and affirm the lives of those assisted as well as the volunteers. Vision Community Church is a new United Methodist Faith Community that meets every Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Warwick Valley Community Center. In four years, it has grown from ten people to more than 100. Don Heatley is pastor. The Vision Web site at www.visiblechurch.org provides more information.
