WARWICK — Vision Community Church will be hosting an Open Mic Night from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, for local high school bands and musicians at Warwick Valley Community Center (Doc Fry Center) on Route 17A in Warwick. During the three-hour event, each of six participating bands will play 20 minute sets. There will be snacks, drinks, and Warwick business-sponsored door prizes. Musicians and merchants interested in participating should call 986-5883. The cover charge of $5 guarantees live music and dancing to local talent. Proceeds for the event will be used to send a volunteer team of 30 youth and adults to repair and weatherize homes for elderly, low-income and disabled residents, as participants in a week-long Work Camp Mission in the summer of 2006. The Work Camp Mission trip is open to teens and adults in the community willing to commit a week of their time to helping those disadvantaged during the summer. Next summer’s trip will mark the third mission trip for the teens. Vision welcomes ongoing donations in support of this annual mission. Gedge Driscoll had this to say of her experience. “I started going to the group workcamp to ‘give back’ some of what I have been blessed with. I discovered that I get much more than I give. Repairing someone’s home is just part of it. It is a rare opportunity to get to know people who are not in my day-to-day life and to make a difference in their lives. The surprising thing for me is that at the same time, these people are impacting my life. Working with the teens from our church is just an added bonus.” Vision Community Church is a new United Methodist Faith Community that meets every Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Warwick Valley Community Center (Doc Fry). In four years, it has grown from ten to over 100 people. Using innovative worship experiences, Vision is making connections with those for whom traditional church styles and structures are not working. The children and youth ministries at the church place a strong emphasis on the experiential and service to others. For more information, call 986-4333 or visit www.visiblechurch.org.
