'Onko-Chishin'

WARWICK — The Warwick Center for the Performing Arts, in collaboration with Fei Tian College, will welcome Miki Orihara to perform "Resonance," her solo concert series, on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., in the Black Box Theatre at 63 Wheeler Ave. in Warwick.
Tickets are available online for $10 (plus applicable fees) or at the door.
Resonance traces the lineage of some of today’s most imaginative dance work through earlier innovators like Martha Clarke, Lar Luvobitch and back to the master works of Martha Graham and José Limón.
In her Resonance, she premiered Shirabyoshi as a recipient of CUNY Dance Initiative 2016-17 residency at La Guardia Performing Arts Center. This production received a tour grant from the Japan Foundation.
“I am deeply interested in the continuity and lineage between Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance," Orihara said in the press release detailing the performance. "I will be dancing American masters’ works and contemporary works in this first solo concert.”
The dancer continued:
"There is a Japanese expression, 'Onko-Chishin' - an attempt to discover new things by studying the past through scrutiny of the old. The goal of this concert series is to explore connections between Worlds of Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance.
"Most of the time, 'Modern Dance' is categorized as an old type of dance and 'Contemporary Dance' refers to what is happening in the moment. But just because a work was choreographed in another decade, does not mean that it can not speak to today’s audience. The stories and themes of these masters’ works are still happening to this generation. The best of these works are timeless."
