Middletown — The Art of the Landscape opens with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 in the Orange Hall Gallery of Orange County Community College. Music by contemporary composers is being presented by Craig Smith, pianist. Eleven professional artists working in several media and producing works from small to large sizes are displaying landscapes in realistic, impressionistic and abstract styles. Artists include Jane Bloodgood Abrams, Kevin Cook, Lynne Digby, Katia Gushue, Lesley Labram, Basha Maryanska, Patrick Milbourn, Susan Miiller, Linda Richichi, Ruth Wetzel and John David Wissler. In addition, an exhibit in Orange Hall Gallery Loft entitled Jeff Parker: Recent Work will complement the show on the main floor. Some of Jeff Parker’s works are landscape-oriented. His artworks are abstract collages. He is a resident of Port Jervis. The curator of the exhibits is Susan Miiller, who showcases her artwork all over the United States and has her studio in Sparrowbush. In addition, she is an art instructor at SUNY Orange and SUNY New Paltz. She explains, “These artists challenge long-standing concepts of what a landscape can be. They go beyond the surface, seeking to transform, not just to copy ... [Through their paintings these] artists invite viewers to appreciate and to value what surrounds us and to be richer for it.” Organizing the works of such quality from twelve artists all in one large show has taken a great deal of work on the part of Susan Miiller. However, viewers will benefit and Cultural Affairs is pleased to be able to present the show. The exhibit continues through Oct. 31 with exhibit hours 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. The gallery will also be open from 2 to 5 p.m. on two Sundays, Oct. 15 and 22. The show and reception are free and open to the public.
