Not too late to participate in postponed ‘Smash'

    Sugar Loaf —Sugar Loaf’s first annual “Summer Smash,” rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 2, because of last week’s rain, is still searching for more artists to participate in the street art competition. Each sponsored artist will be given a set of pastels and a 10-by-10 foot section of King’s Highway to create a street painting. The competition begins at 10 a.m. and artists can register the day of the event in front of the Barnsider Tavern in Sugar Loaf. Participation is free with an assigned sponsor. At 5 p.m., an award of $500 will be given as the grand prize for the best street painting, and another $1,000 given as additional awards. The schedule of events is as follows. 8 a.m. — Broadview Estate hike, led by Tracy Schuh from the Preservation Collective. Call 469-1608 for more information. 9 a.m. — Sugar Loaf Mountain hike, lead by Jay from the Sugar Loaf Historical Society. Call 469-8832 for meeting location and time. 9 a.m. — “Fastest Kid on the Block” foot race open to all ages. There is a $10 registration fee; the registration tent is in Barnsider parking lot. Call Nick at 469-9382 for more information. 10:30 a.m. — “Kids Zone” opens, offering pony and horse rides, crafts, face painting. 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Drop off for Cookie Bake-Off (see more details, below), judged by local chefs Erik Johansen of The Iron Forge Inn, Scott Bender of The Barnsider, and Chef Victori of Amarone’s. They will be joined by three local politicians. The entry fee is $5. Call Sandy at 469-1588 for more information on how to enter. 3-4 p.m. — Judging for Cookie Bake-Off. 5 p.m. — Awards for street art competition. n Cookie bake-off Drop off original, home-baked cookies at the Starlight Café between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All entrants are required to bake three dozen cookies of their choice and provide a copy of the recipe for the judges. Tarts, brownies, and bars are not accepted. Gift certificates and gift baskets will be given out as prizes. All extra cookies will be sold to help raise funds for the Sugar Loaf Vision Committee.
