‘Music Under the Stars’ season begins July 6

— The West Point Band’s 2013 “Music Under the Stars” concert series begins Saturday, July 6, with the band’s Independence Day Celebration.

The program begins at 6 p.m. at West Point’s Trophy Point Amphitheater and will feature the Concert Band, Hellcats and the West Point Band’s rock band, the Benny Havens Band.

There will be fireworks at the end of the performance.

In the event of rain, the concert will take place on Sunday, July 7.

The schedule
The second concert in the series is the band’s annual Kid’s Night with activities for children of all ages. The concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. The West Point Band’s Quintette 7 will give an introduction to a variety of instruments.

On Sunday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m., the Jazz Knights will perform the music of Billy Joel. The concert will include many of the signer/songwriter’s greatest hits.

The West Point Band’s brass and percussion sections take the stage on Sunday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m. for Brass and Percussion on the Hudson. The concert will include brass band arrangements of George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and Gioachino Rossini’s “William Tell Overture.”

The West Point Band’s Steelband will take the stage on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in a program entitled “Caribbean Sunset.” The program will feature virtuosic steel drum playing and soothing island sounds.

The Music Under the Stars season closes on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. with the band’s Labor Day Celebration featuring all of the West Point Band’s performing groups and fireworks. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held on Monday, Sept. 2.

All concerts are free and open to all.

Audiences are invited to bring a picnic and a blanket and enjoy the music.
