Music Under The Stars offers Jazz Americana by Jazz Knights

West Point The United States Military Academy Band’s Jazz Knights will present Jazz Americana at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, at Trophy Point Amphitheatre in West Point. The concert will feature the music of Stan Kenton, Bob Mintzer, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others. Stan Kenton’s “23 Degrees North, 82 Degrees West” will open the program. The band will also perform “Edelweiss,” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, arranged by Staff Sgt. Mark Tonelli, and Buck Clayton’s “Fiesta in Blue,” arranged by Sgt. 1st Class Harvey Tibbs. Clayton was a trumpeter in the Count Basie Band for eleven years. Tibbs has been a member of the Jazz Knights trombone section since August of 1984. Originally from Richmond, Va., he received a bachelor of music degree from West Virginia University, where he majored in music education. As a freelance trombonist, he has performed with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and in the Broadway musical “42nd Street.” He has also performed with groups led by Clayton and Dan Barrett.
