Music in Central Valley presents music for clarinet, cello, and piano
Central Valley Music in Central Valley will present “Mixed Ensembles: Music for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, at Central Valley United Methodist Church on Smith Clove Road. The program will feature clarinetist Susan Martula, cellist Amy Sue Barston, and pianist Janice Nimetz, and include works by Bach, Bazelaire, Schumann, Muczynski, and Silverman, along with “Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano” by Johannes Brahms. Clarinetist Martula currently serves as principal chair of the Albany Symphony Orchestra (where she appeared as soloist in “Clarinet Concerto by Mozart” this past season) and the Berkshire Orchestra, and plays in summer with the Lake George Opera Orchestra. She has appeared with numerous ensembles in the Capital district, and is a member of the Williams Chamber Players and the Windham Chamber Festival. Cellist Barston has performed as soloist and chamber musician in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The Ravinia Festival, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, and Caramoor International Music Festival, including performances in Israel, Australia, Canada, and England. In 1992 at age seventeen, she appeared as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on live television, won First Prize and the Audience Prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and won First Prize in the Society of American Musicians’ Competition. She has a bachelor’s in music from University of Southern California, and studied with Joel Krosnick and Robert Mann at the Juilliard School, where she received a master’s in music. Currently, she is a faculty member at the New York School for Strings, and the Suzuki Institutes. She is also a teaching artist for the Lincoln Center Institute and the Music Institute of Chicago. Pianist Nimetz has performed in solo recital throughout the Northeastern United States, and has appeared as chamber music recitalist with the Quartet of the Hudson Highlands, the Orange Chamber Ensemble, on the West Point Chamber Music series, and in the Capital District. She has been heard on WAMC-Radio in Albany, at the four-hand festival in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Currently, she is a piano instructor at Emma Willard School and the Rockland Conservatory, and is director of music at Central Valley United Methodist Church.
