Music at Trophy Point celebrates Army's birthday

West Point The United States Military Academy Concert Band, under the direction of Lt. Col. Timothy Holtan, will present a concert celebrating the Army’s birthday at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, at the Trophy Point amphitheater. The concert will open with “A Summer’s Overture” by Dr. Gordon Ring, a professor of music at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. The program will also include music from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” Holtan will conduct Malcom Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances” and Derek Bourgeois’ “Serenade.” The concert will also include marches by Edwin Franko Goldman, and the music of Dimitri Shostakovich. Sgt. 1st Class MaryKay Messenger will sing Richard Rogers’ “June is Busting Out All Over.” Staff Sgt. Glenn West will perform Robert Schumann’s “Frölicher Landmann” (The Happy Farmer) for solo bassoon and band. West, from Spokane, Wash., joined the band in September of 2004. A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a master of music degree, West studied bassoon with Dr. Wendal Jones of the Spokane Symphony, Charles Ullery of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Sharon Kuster from the San Antonio Symphony. He is a member of the West Point Woodwind Quintet. Allow extra travel time for inspections.
