MSMC announces spring cultural calendar

    NEWBURGH — The Cultural Center at Mount Saint Mary College will present a children’s puppet show, an Irish Festival and seven lectures during the spring semester and the public is welcome. The puppet show and the concert have modest admission fees and will take place in Hudson Hall Auditorium. The lectures are free and will take place at 4 p.m. in the Villa Library; refreshments will be served. The calendar begins with a lecture, “Johann Sebastian Bach: Portrait of a Musician from the Baroque,” on Tuesday, Jan. 30, by Suzanne Forsberg, Ph.D., professor of fine arts at St. Francis College, Brooklyn. Forsberg will illustrate her talk with slides and CDs. Julia Foulkes, Ph.D., professor of history and urban studies at the New School of Social Research, Manhattan, will talk about “The Harlem Renaissance and the Black Body” on Thursday, Feb. 8. Susan Aberth, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history at Bard College, will discuss “Women Surrealists in Mexico” Thursday, Feb. 22. Beth Quinn, Times Herald-Record columnist and reporter, will lecture on “Humor: What Makes Us Laugh? - And How Does It Reveal Just How Smart We Are?” Thursday, March 1. Vince Begley, MSMC director of marketing communications, will lecture on “History Happened Here: The Story of the Mount Property,” Tuesday, March 20. A children’s puppet variety show will be presented at 12:45 p.m. Friday, March 23. The show is geared for children, ages 3 to 8. The general admission price is $3. The Irish Festival of music, featuring the Wild Rovers; step dancing; food and drink will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 1. The general admission price is $5 and children under 12 are free. Jay Rogoff, lecturer in English and liberal studies at Skidmore College, will lecture on “Shakespeare and Balanchine” on Thursday, April 12. Josefine Koehn-Haskins, journalist and adjunct professor of German at SUNY New Paltz, will discuss “How Web 2.0 Has Changed the World of Media” Thursday, April 26.
