Moscow opera company to perform Die Fledermaus'

Sugar Loaf Moscow’s Helikon Opera Company will perform “Die Fledermaus” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts on King’s Highway in Sugar Loaf. Kings Theatre Company has arranged for the opera company’s performance of Johann Strauss’s comic operetta “Die Fledermaus (The Bat).” Prince Orlovsky’s ball provides the backdrop for mistaken identities, flirtations, frivolities, and revenge, sparkled with waltzes and arias. The opera, featuring a 50-member company and a live orchestra, will be performed in German with English supertitles. Directed by Dmitri Bertman and conducted by Kiril Tikhonov, Helikon has developed a reputation for staging original productions of classic operas. Established in 1990, the company has performed in the United States, the United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Lebanon, and Israel, and has released several CDs. Winners of numerous Golden Mask Awards, Helikon recently won four of the five opera awards given in the opera division including: best opera, best director of an opera (Dmitri Bertman), best conductor of an opera (Vladimir Ponkin) and best female performer in an opera (Anna Kazakova).
