Monument to be rededicated
Goshen The Orange Blossom Monument Rededication ceremony, in Goshen, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m., with music provided by the 77th New York Regimental Balladeers, a string and vocal period group, who will perform much of the music played at the original ceremony 100 years ago. The balladeers will play until 2 p.m., at which time area church bells will toll 249 times for the 249 war dead listed on the monument. At the same time members of the 124th Re-enactor Group will march from the old campgrounds of the 124th on Erie street to the monument. At that point, local politicians and area historians will speak, and a sixth grader from Walden will read the official wording of Colonel Bradley’s Medal of Honor. The monument will be rededicated, followed by taps. Refreshments and exhibits will be available at the 1841 courthouse after the ceremony. The monument committee also hopes to have a number of exhibits from the 124th, including Colonel Bradley’s Medal of Honor, as well as a video on the regiment and Civil War artwork from local artist Kevin Storms. The promoters of this event include the County Executive’s Office, Orange County Historian, The 124th NYVI re-enactors, the Colonel Ellis Camp 124 SUVCW (which includes some descendants of the 124th) and the Monument Committee.
