Monroe-Woodbury — The Monroe-Woodbury Central School District will hold its annual Art Show and Art Scholarship Auction on the weekend of April 28 to 30 at the high school at 155 Dunderberg Road in Central Valley. The event will also include an “Empty Bowls” project to combat hunger. An opening reception for the Art Show will be held, with the artists, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 28, in the lobby gallery. Saturday viewing hours will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday’s from noon to 5 p.m. The show will include artwork from students throughout the district, ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade. A range of work will be displayed, including paintings, prints, computer animation, photography, ceramics, sculpture, video productions, drawings, graphics and more, showcasing the artistic talents of the students. A highlight will be the portfolio presentations of high school senior art majors. As part of the festivities, the seventh annual Art Scholarship Auction of furniture will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 28. All the chairs and tables have been hand-painted by senior art majors, drawing and painting students and district art staff, and each piece focuses on historic artistic styles or masterpieces of various artists. All proceeds will benefit the scholarship program for graduating seniors. The “Empty Bowls” project, an effort to stamp out hunger in the community, will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 28. The basic idea is that each participant purchases a ceramic bowl, for a suggested minimum donation of ten dollars, and then is served a simple meal in the bowl, including a scoop of ice cream. The original, hand-glazed ceramic bowl is a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. The money collected will be donated to the local food pantry. The project is a joint effort by the art department staff and students, the art guild, and YEHH (Youth for Ending Hunger and Homelessness) club.
