Warwick — Martin Luther King Day will be celebrated with a service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at Warwick United Methodist Church, on the corner of Forrester Ave. and Route 17A in Warwick. The service will be led by Rev. Mashona Davis, pastor of Union A.M.E. Church of Warwick, and Rev. Chris Yount, pastor of Warwick United Methodist Church. The keynote speaker will be Rev. Joseph Walston, pastor of Calvary Fellowship A.M.E. Church, Brooklyn. The birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. has been observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday in January since 1986. To recall and celebrate the positive contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week beginning on Feb. 12, 1926. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. For more information, call 986-3649 or visit www.unionamechurch.org.
