Memorial Day parades scheduled in Monroe, Woodbury and Harriman

    The following is a list of parades scheduled locally for Memorial Day: Monroe The Memorial Day parade in Monroe will be Sunday, May 27. Step-off time is 1:30 p.m. From Smith Clove Park through town, stopping at the Veterans Memorial Park on 17M, and ending at the Monroe Cemetery with guest speakers. The parade is sponsored by the Monroe Veterans Coalition Committee. Woodbury The Town of Woodbury Memorial Day Parade will be held Sunday, May 27. The parade forms at 12:30 p.m. on Bond Street and begins north on Route 32 at 1 p.m., pausing at both the Summit Avenue Monument in Central Valley and the Victory Park Monument in Highland Mills to conduct brief wreath-laying ceremonies. The Parade will continue north to the Cemetery of the Highlands where it will end and the Memorial Day Ceremonies will be held at the Veteran’s Monument and Firemen’s Monument at 2:30 p.m. This years Grand Marshall is Woodbury resident Charles Barker, who served in the United States Marine Corps between 1950 and 1952 as a sergeant. Barker also have served Woodbury as a volunteer firefighter since 1962, as a member of the Woodbury American Legion Post 779 since 1963, as a member of the Cemetery of the Highlands Board since 1974 and as a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Rotary. The parade includes veterans, marching bands, color guards, civic organizations, classic cars and other activities, Refreshments will be served to all marchers at the end of the parade and ceremonies, in the parking lot next to the Highland Mills Methodist Church, compliments of and by the Woodbury Community Association. Portions of Route 32 in Woodbury along the Parade route will be closed during the parade. Travelers should plan for detours. Harriman The Village of Harriman Memorial Day ceremonies will be held on Monday, May 28. The ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. with a worship service at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, Route 17M in Harriman. Following the worship service, a legion honor guard will place a wreath on the grave of Lawrence E. Mulligan who was killed in action in World War II. Honor guards of participating veterans organizations and Harriman Engine Company #1 will then proceed to the veterans’ memorial in the village square for ceremonies at approximately 11 a.m. At the conclusion of the ceremony, we will proceed to the VFW memorial on River Road for a memorial service.
